CURITIBA, the moderm city in Brazil

Curitiba in Southearn Brazil has earned in international reputation for good city management with its innovative programs for public transport, industrial pollution control and wate recycling. As one of Brazil's fastest growing cities, it has avoided many of the problems that usually go with rapid expansion. early in si development, curitiba adopted a plan for linear growth along radial axes using the areas in the between for green space and leisure facilities as well as for industrial and housing development.

the transport network in Curitiba is managed by a city authority which lays down operating rules, set timables and monitors performance. the buses themselves are run by private companies, licenced by the city authority. The bus system in Curitiba which was chosen to be focused on by authority is Farcheaper in terms of capital cost than underground metro or rail. it's a simple transparent system and it works some 75% of comuters travel by bus.

Another innovation has been the preservation of green space per capita has increased one hundrefold, wich is all the more amazing as this increase took place during a period of rapid population growth.

A key factor in Curitiba's civic development has been its mayors, whose enthusiasm and persistance have been maintained for overs 20 years. But as they have always stressed, it is ultimately the people themselves the city belongs.
